Rachel Potek, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow, Clinical/School Psychologist
Dr. Potek believes that by better understanding how our thoughts, emotions and personal traits interact, every individual has the capacity to skillfully and insightfully navigate challenges in life. Whether supporting families through psychoeducational assessment or in therapy, she has a keen interest in identifying the unique goals of each individual/family and working collaboratively with her clients to achieve those goals. Dr. Potek endeavors to create a warm, supportive and dynamic space where clients can feel the comfort and safety that is fundamental to growth and change.
Dr. Potek has worked in the United States and abroad, developing a special interest in international mental health and school-related issues. Drawing primarily from evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT and Mindfulness, Dr. Potek has focused her therapy work primarily on anxiety disorders, trauma, depression, adjustment disorders and navigating major life changes. She also has a passion for testing because, when needed, it can be instrumental to pinpoint why a child is struggling, highlight strengths, and implement focused and effective strategies to help the child see more success in school and in life.
Dr. Potek received her Psychology Doctorate from New York University in a School and Child Clinical program. During her training she helped to pilot a school-based Mindfulness curriculum to support adolescents with stress management. She completed her training with a joint experience between St. Luke’s/Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and the Muhimbili University Hospital of Tanzania. As part of her experience in Tanzania she was instrumental in developing and writing a curriculum for the first ever Masters of Psychology in the country. She also provided consulting and treatment services to international organizations such as the Peace Corps, the United Nations, the United States Embassy and other international organizations and schools. Her work included conducting comprehensive assessments for children and families living abroad and providing therapy to local and international communities. Prior to her work abroad, Dr. Potek worked as a psychologist in a variety of school and clinical settings in New York City. She also has over 10 years of experience as a teacher in Mexico, Guatemala and New York City. Her range of experiences helps Dr. Potek easily relate to and appreciate clients from many different backgrounds.
